S'mae ti heddiw? A Conference Reminder "S4C: The First 25 Years"

S4C: The first 25 years
International conference to mark the first 25 years of broadcasting by S4C (Welsh language television)

Date: 2-3 November 2007

Location: The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies in association with the Wales Institute for Cultural and Communication Industries and the Mercator Centre for Minority Languages is hosting a two day international conference at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth to mark the 25th anniversary of the first broadcast by S4C, the Welsh language television channel, on 1st November 1982.

The Conference aims to analyse significant events and scrutinise major decisions taken in the trajectory of S4C from the legendary broadcasting campaign right through to the channel’s vision of its future role and position in the market-led, post-analogue, multi-platform world.

In addition to academic papers and presentations, keynote speeches and panel discussion, the Conference will hold a number of unique witness sessions during which key figures will be interviewed in depth on the subject of their role in the creation / development of S4C.

While the focus of this Conference is firmly on S4C as a Welsh language broadcaster, its position as the first dedicated minority language channel will be addressed through the comparative international context.

Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to:

The emergence of S4C as a cultural, economic and linguistic force in Wales
The relationship between S4C and other broadcasters in Wales and the UK
S4C as pioneer of minority language broadcasting
S4C as multi-platform content disseminator

Minority Language Media In The European Union

Mercator's main goal is to gather, store, analyse and distribute information through a documentation and information network for regional and minority languages in the European Union.

Mercator Media is one of the three research and documentation centres in the Mercator network. Mercator was founded as an initiative of the European Commission in 1987 to meet the growing interest in various aspects of minority and regional languages and the increasing need of the language communities to exchange experiences and cooperate in a European context. Through Mercator it has become possible to improve the accessibility and exchange of information of minority and regional languages in a more systematic way.

'What's Welsh for Performance?: Constructing an Archive of Performance Art in Wales'

DR. HEIKE ROMS

WEDNESDAY, 17 OCTOBER 2007

5PM

Please come to the ATRiuM Reception, Room to be announced.

REFRESHMENTS WILL BE PROVIDED

ALL WELCOME!

This presentation introduces What¹s Welsh for Performance? (Beth yw performance yn Gymraeg?), a major research project devoted to uncovering and archiving the history of performance art in Wales.

Performance art is now widely recognized as representing a vital part of the visual arts in this country, yet one currently searches in vain for any records or critical evaluations of its practices in accounts of Welsh art history.

The project is an attempt to address this neglect.

The presentation discusses some of the methodological implications of archiving performance work with reference to the first ten years of the art form after its initial appearance in Wales in 1968, before presenting the two main strands of the Welsh performance and a publicly staged Oral History series.

Dr Heike Roms is lecturer in Performance Studies in the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies, Aberystwyth University.

She has published on contemporary performance practice, particularly on work emanating from Wales, for publications such as Performance Research, Inter, Frakcija, Live Art Magazine, New Welsh Review, Planet and Cyfrwng.

She is project director of What's Welsh for Performance?, a major research project devoted to uncovering and archiving the history of performance art in Wales (www.performance-wales.org).

A major new film festival has been launched, taking place in Aberystwyth from 25 -28 October 2007. Fflics is a joint project between The National Library of Wales and Aberystwyth Arts Centre, and will include over 25 films filmed in the first half of the 20th century, together with a series of discussions, live musical performances and special events.

Cinematic highlights include a restoration print screening of 'How Green Was My Valley' the premier screening of the newly restored 'Y Chwarelwr', a gala screening of 'The Life Story of David Lloyd George', plus many, many more films from a classic era.

Andrew Green, Librarian, The National Library of Wales said:

'Fflics is a wonderful opportunity to mark Wales' early contributions to the world of cinema, and to see the films on the big screen where they belong.

We are sure that the festival will appeal to a wide range of people - from cinema buffs keen to see work that is rarely screened, to those keen to gain an historical perspective of Wales in the first half of the century.

Its going to be a fascinating four days.'
