S'mae ti heddiw? A Conference Reminder "S4C: The First 25 Years"

S4C: The first 25 years
International conference to mark the first 25 years of broadcasting by S4C (Welsh language television)

Date: 2-3 November 2007

Location: The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies in association with the Wales Institute for Cultural and Communication Industries and the Mercator Centre for Minority Languages is hosting a two day international conference at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth to mark the 25th anniversary of the first broadcast by S4C, the Welsh language television channel, on 1st November 1982.

The Conference aims to analyse significant events and scrutinise major decisions taken in the trajectory of S4C from the legendary broadcasting campaign right through to the channel’s vision of its future role and position in the market-led, post-analogue, multi-platform world.

In addition to academic papers and presentations, keynote speeches and panel discussion, the Conference will hold a number of unique witness sessions during which key figures will be interviewed in depth on the subject of their role in the creation / development of S4C.

While the focus of this Conference is firmly on S4C as a Welsh language broadcaster, its position as the first dedicated minority language channel will be addressed through the comparative international context.

Topics to be discussed include, but are not limited to:

The emergence of S4C as a cultural, economic and linguistic force in Wales
The relationship between S4C and other broadcasters in Wales and the UK
S4C as pioneer of minority language broadcasting
S4C as multi-platform content disseminator
S4C and cultural vitality in Wales

Minority Language Media In The European Union

Mercator's main goal is to gather, store, analyse and distribute information through a documentation and information network for regional and minority languages in the European Union.

Mercator Media is one of the three research and documentation centres in the Mercator network. Mercator was founded as an initiative of the European Commission in 1987 to meet the growing interest in various aspects of minority and regional languages and the increasing need of the language communities to exchange experiences and cooperate in a European context. Through Mercator it has become possible to improve the accessibility and exchange of information of minority and regional languages in a more systematic way.

Long-Delayed Construction of Dragon International Studios 'Valleywood' Finally Moves Ahead

[Pictured above: Welsh Mountain scenery and new state-of-the-art film and television studios are expected to lure productions to Wales.]

The BBC is reporting that the long-delayed Welsh film and television studios project in South Wales started last week, after almost six frustrating years of set-backs and delays.

'Valleywood' building work begins -- Building work at the so-called "Valleywood" film studios near Bridgend has begun.

"The first stage of the £330m development will be built at Llanilid, near Llanharan, following delays caused by sewerage problems and bad weather."

"Developers said the initial phase of the Dragon International Ltd plan would feature four film stages and work on a major access road."

"Construction on the first stage of the plan is set to finish by June 2008."

"Oscar-winning actor and director Richard Attenborough, who has been the project chairman, said in January 2006 the scheme would "build studios that have not been seen for decades throughout the world"."

"Organisers claim the sound stages and TV studios will make south Wales a centre of the UK film industry.'

A well-made short report on You Tube Video asks, "What happened to the Valleywood project? Six years ago, a consortium announced plans to build a major film studio in the Welsh Valleys, but things haven't quite gone to plan. Chris Doidge reports on the project's problems and its future":

Valleywood

The studio itself and it's related complex are expected to generate at least 1,700 new jobs at the site. Film studios and the film industry rely upon an enormous number of support vendors and suppliers and craftsmen, so there is also an anticipated positive economic impact expected over time on the entire region.

For example, the lengthy film credits at the end of every feature film, which a lot of audiences ignore, show a list of support workers, including everything from caterers, to florists to publicists to carpenters, needed to produce feature films and television products.

Wales's close proximity to London already gives it a competitive position in the UK media production market, and the lower costs in Wales when compared to southern England make Wales a logical choice for film and TV production managers.

Ultimately, the film and TV industry needs highly qualified and experienced workers in many support fields, but the bottom line of the production budget drives the choice of production studio location.

For years, U.S. and European film productions have been 'running away' to studios like Barrandov Studios (Prague) in the Czech Republic, because the costs are lower and scenery is splendid.

Wales's stands to challenge English and other European studios in their competition for film and TV productions for similar reasons.

Also, English studios are aging, built decades ago with now-obsolete technology, and are being threatened by other real estate encroachments in land-pricey southern England.

This is not the case in many parts of the South Wales Valleys, where former mining communities boost plenty of land for such development.

The Rhondda-Cynon-Taff official website also described the progress of the developers:

"The Council has worked with developers to help facilitate a start on site on 13th August."

"Four film stages for Dragon International Ltd and the provision of the western end of the major access road planned to run through the site, are the particular developments starting now."

"These form part of the major strategic development site based on the film studio's development, for which planning permission has already been granted by the Council."

"Considerable work has been completed over the past few months, with the Council working with Cofton Wales and Dragon International to make sure that all the planning conditions have been properly dealt with. Progress has been good."

"It is anticipated that the work on site will run through until next year with an expected substantial completion in June 2008."

Cllr Russell Roberts says “ I am delighted that we will soon see buildings coming out of the ground at Llanilid. The Council granted planning permission some time ago for this site, but it will be great to see the development kick started now with the Silent Stages and the other major infrastructure works.”

This is an unofficial Dragon International Studios website owned by two enthusiasts of "Valleywood" since 2000.

"Extraordinary plans were unveiled by executive chairman Lord Attenborough in 2001 a world class ultra-large state of the art movie studio complex as part of a development including movie-based leisure attractions and an international film academy, some parts to be completed by 2006 (now early 2008 and overall finish hopefully by 2010)."

Official contact information can be attained through the Twickenham Film Studios website by clicking here.

The Cofton Group of Developers has more news here:

According to the Cofton Group website:

"Cofton Wales, specialists in large-scale brownfield land regeneration, has announced that construction work will start at Llanilid, near Llanharan, on Monday 13th August."

"The planned work comprises two separate projects; the first is the construction of four film stages for Dragon International Studios and the second project is an artery road to service the first phase of a mixed-use commercial development."

"The scheme was granted outline planning permission by local authority Rhondda Cynon Taff in December 2003 and includes consent for a business park, hotel and leisure facilities in addition to the film studios."

I thought James was especially kind and helpful to patiently give me advice last year about completing my dissertation.

He went out of his way to encourage me and to offer some guidance, even though I was from a different institution.

This is certainly tragic and sad news, and our hearts go out to his family, students, colleagues and friends.

He will be missed.

It's Time For You To Expose Yourself in Cardiff Bay (to Art at the Wales Millennium Centre)

Remember that song by Chicago, 'Saturday in the Park'?

Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of july
Saturday in the park
I think it was the Fourth of july
People dancing, people laughing
A man selling ice cream
Singing Italian songs
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time
For Saturday . . .

Do you despise George Bush, but love Americans? Then get out next weekend and celebrate the Fourth of July!

And what better way to celebrate the daring spirit of America, than with new Welsh Art?

The University of Glamorgan Purchase Prize Exhibit is open to the public from 10 am until 6 pm Monday to Sunday.

Bring yourself, maybe bring a date, and if you fancy something new to hang on your walls, then bring your check book!

But either way, get out and come to Cardiff Bay and buy some Italian Ice cream while you wander among the crowds, and maybe fall in love . . .

Who knows? It could happen, even to You!

Sexy Welsh God Again Tops America's Summer Weekend Hollywood Boxoffice

Pictured above: Welsh actor Ioan Gruffudd, star of the Fantastic Four (2007)

Welsh actors dominate as Hollywood's Libido Lifeblood for four decades . . .

Is there ever a time when the 'Land of Song' doesn't dominate and control the starring roles of Hollywood?

Ifor Novello, Richard Burton, Anthony Hopkins, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Bale, Siân Phillips, Emlyn Williams, Catherine Zeta Jones -- I'm running out of breath!

And now Ioan Gruffudd's sexy comic book character is 'stretching' across America!

According to the Hollywood Reporter

'Fantastic Four' scores with $57.4 million debut weekend
By Gregg Kilday
June 18, 2007

"20th Century Fox's "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer" rode a commanding wave to the top of the North American boxoffice during the weekend, finding a broad-based audience with the help of a family-friendly PG rating."

"The original "Fantastic Four," with a PG-13 rating, opened to $56.1 million in 2005, and its sequel didn't lose any momentum and outgrossed its predecessor with an estimated bow of $57.4 million."

Didn't anyone see Ioan Gruffudd speaking Welsh on the Graham Norton Show a couple months ago?

More on the sexy Welshman later . . .

Here's one for your summer reading list: Professor Peter Stead's "Acting Wales, Stars of Stage & Screen" (2002) University of Wales Press.

The Welsh and New York's Ellis Island -- Take your mini-cam!

Looking for your Welsh cousins in America?

Visit the New World Celts website!

In the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, legend tells us that Ellis Island was named for a Welsh pub owner who gave the Island his name!

Fancy a quick trip to the States while the dollar is still so low against the pound? Why not make your own amateur Welsh home movie, and share it with the world?

This is a perfect year to visit New York City, and while you're there, check out the Welsh history at Ellis Island. There's an electronic board where you can select 'Welsh' to see where all the Welsh immigrants to America are living today -- pretty cool!

Take a Welsh flag and a mini-cam along, and take some video or photos of you and your mates in front of Niagara Falls, the Empire State Building, The statue of Liberty, etc., and we'll post the streaming video here in the Welsh Music, Film, and Books Symposium at the end of the summer, just for fun!

Zoom Airlines now has cheap charter flights, non-stop Cardiff to Toronto. Spend a night in Toronto and visit the Welsh Speaking Canadian Chapel, celebrating their 100th Anniversary this summer with lots of festivities!

I suggest you get the Canadian Trains/Amtrak train from Toronto to New York City -- the scenic travel across New York State is worth the time and price! Either go to Montreal first, and then travel south along the Hudson River, or take the train past Niagara Falls and then via Buffalo to NYC.

Visit Zoom Airlines Here.

George Bush is bringing Ellis Island into the news again, with the Immigration Reform Bill that he's trying to pass. He's a lame duck, and the bill is flawed, but Ellis Island rocks!

According to Reuters:

Ellis Island's past returns in immigration row

By Daniel Trotta Thu Jun 14, 10:47 AM ET
ELLIS ISLAND, New York (Reuters) - Ellis Island, once the gateway to America for millions of immigrants, is having a make-over after years of neglect that nearly allowed nature to destroy a national treasure.

But experts caution that, in all of the nostalgia, the country should remember past debates over who should be allowed into the United States.

The restoration of the back end of the 32-acre (13-hectare) island in New York harbor comes as the immigration debate rages anew and President George W. Bush's reforms are stalled.

"I do think it's interesting that we worship Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty and yet we want to pull up the gang planks now that we're here," said Kenneth T. Jackson, a history professor at New York's Columbia University.

Some 12 million immigrants, nearly all European, passed through Ellis Island before entering the United States, mostly from 1892 to 1924, though it remained operational until 1954.

Newcomers marveled at views of the New York skyline and the Statue of Liberty on a nearby island, providing memories passed down through the generations.

As many as 100 million Americans have ancestors who passed through Ellis Island, where a French renaissance-style brick palace built in 1900 welcomed hardscrabble immigrants who left the Old World behind.

That main building, with its cavernous arrivals area and soaring ceiling, was repaired in the late 1980s and attracts ferries full of American and foreign tourists.

A new project led by a group called Save Ellis Island is attempting to raise public and private funds for a $250 million rehabilitation of a labyrinth of 30 buildings that were part of a 750-bed hospital for sick newcomers.

This follows the restoration unveiled in April of the ferry building, where processed immigrants boarded boats to New York City and the New Jersey shore.

Private donations for the restoration have come from rich Americans whose ancestors arrived through Ellis Island.

American film scholar Mark Leslie Woods Launches Welsh Film, Music, and Book Review Symposium

Croeso i drafodaeth 'da fi ar y we, gyda newyddion cerddoriaeth, ffilmiau, barddoniaeth, ffuglen, dramau, a storiau byr y Gymru.

Welcome to my online symposium, your one source for news and reviews about new and old, Welsh Music, Film, Poetry, Fiction, Dramas, and Short Stories.

In June 2007 I completed my Ph.D. in Film Studies at the University of Glamorgan in Wales, and for the past five years I have watched and reviewed over 100 Welsh films and television products, as part of my research.

While there is extensive research in the field of Welsh national cinema by Berry, Blandford, Ffrancon and others, there is also a paucity of qualified scholarship in important areas of this field.

Welsh national cinema is a national cinema, which has struggled to survive, has struggled to overcome systemic and historic obstacles to scholarship, as well as funding, production, exhibition and distribution of its products, related organizations, agents and services.

Consequently, the National cinema of Wales will only benefit from further scholarship, and the implied enhancement of exposure to new and different audiences, from both and industrial and cultural perspective.

Each month I hope to share my findings and reviews with you, and I hope you'll tell me about your favorite films, as well!
